Product Description
A thoroughly modern design that's optimized for select Canon EOS digital SLRs. Its angle of view is equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, with a floating optical system that can focus down to full life-size (1:1) magnification. Inner focusing, driven by a silent and powerful ring-type USM, means the lens' overall length never changes during focus. This lens is a wonderful multi-purpose lens that's equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits or available-light photos. Like all Canon EF-S Lenses, its use is restricted to the EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel and EOS Digital Rebel XT cameras (as of February 2005).
Amazon.com Product DescriptionBring small things into full-sized view with the Canon EF 60mm macro USM lens. Macro lenses can uncover detail that would be impossible to detect by the eye and give new perspective to extremely minute subjects such as insects or the petals of a small flower, and this lens is no exception. The 60mm lens offers an angle of view that's equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, along with a floating optical system that can focus down to life-size 1:1 magnification. The inner focusing system, meanwhile, is driven by a silent and powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM), meaning the lens's overall length never changes during focus. Ultimately, the multi-purpose lens is equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits, or available-light photos. Like all Canon EF-S lenses, this lens is restricted to the EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel, and EOS Digital Rebel XT cameras. - Focal length: 60mm

 | | Great Lens on my T2i for Amateur Photog! | August - 19 - 2010 | | | by Luke Stokebrand (Luke) from Phoenix, AZ USA
After a 2 week debate on what lens to get for my new camera, i decided on the 60mm f/2.8! The 2 front runners were the 50mm f/1.4 USM and the 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, and upon scouring the internet it seems that the 60mm combines the best of both these lenses. Right out of the box, i knew i made the right decision.
Construction: Solid, feels good, not cheap
Image Quality: Outstanding, have taken more Portraits than Macro shots, and those shots have turned out wonderful. Samples here: [...]
Cons: Even @ 60mm you'll still need a tripod for those close up shots is average light, not the lens' fault just the nature of the beast!

| | | | | | Hidden Treasure | August - 12 - 2010 | | | by L. Milaychev from Cincinnati, OH USA
This lens is a "hidden treasure" - it is easy to overlook being classified as Macro. It is great for object and portrait photography as many other reviews state. Build wise it feels like a high quality product. Photos taken with this lens look like from L class -- very sharp and vibrant. I'd go as far as to say that this lens justifies owning APS-C body, just to be able to use this lens.
Keep in mind microadjustment function available in some Canon cameras. I performed it on my 7D and no adjustment was needed. This may be obvious but I will mention anyway: this lens is not for moving objects and it is not best choice for landscapes. Focusing while not slow is not fast either. f/22-f/32 range seems to be slightly less sharp, but then again most lenses produce sharpest results at around f/5.6 - f/8 range.
Try shooting butterflies with flowers in the background at around f/4 - f/5.6. Bokeh is so nice, it looks almost like if background was purposefully "manufactured". You are practically guaranteed getting colorful "spring-mood" shots worth framing. Just watch for exposure to be fast enough if handholding by choosing ISO accordingly.
Rating note: my reviews are for the subject product. Shipment, seller pricing & support, etc can be noted but do not impact my ratings.
In a way of discalimer: I prefer buying from Amazon but I did not buy this item from Amazon which sometimes happens based on availability, value, or shipment dates.
To conclude: I was considering expanding lens collection to macro and portrait "some day" since my hobby doesn't justify high expenses. Then I noticed this lens, removed Canon 50mm (~$99) from my wish list and went for it! Three birds with one stone, figuratively speaking...
| | | | | | canon macro | August - 04 - 2010 | | | by Mike This is an excellent lens which captures just what you're looking at and for. The picture quality is great.
| | | | | | Outstanding Macro! | July - 12 - 2010 | | | by G. Stojanowski from Sierra Vista, AZ
This EF-S lens is an outstanding addtion to any user of Canon's "small sensor" cameras, from Rebel to 7D! Its focal length of 60mm is not only a terrific Macro lens for all but the most "jittery" subjects such as small insects, its 35mm camera equivalent of 96mm makes it an ideal, relatively fast portrait lens too! A true "two-fer" at a very reasonable price. Optically, it offers superior performance in both macro and prime lens mode. After using it for a couple of months, I am continually impressed with the versatility and fine image quality of this lens. I heartily recommend it without reservation!
| | | | | | Money well spent... | July - 01 - 2010 | | | by George S I build a lot of scale models and needed a lens of this type to get in nice and tight and show off a lot of detail. I don't have a lot of time to be a professional shutterbug---all I want to do is take great pics of my work without attaining a Bachelor's degree. This lens really gets it done. Beautiful, detailed shots that are crystal clear. I had a hard time coming to terms with paying almost as much money for the lens as we did the camera, but it's worth every penny and more. I have the standard 18---55mm, and 75---300mm lens that came with the camera and they're "ok", but there's a reason those lens were packaged with my camera for $679...you get what you pay for!
Buy a better lens that suits your needs and don't look back!
