 | | OOoooppppsss... AC Adaptor REQUIRED to RUN | September - 06 - 2010 |
| | by Jay Stevenson from New Franklin, MO
On an OVERALL POINT-of-VIEW, this is a great little USB External Hard Drive with big capacity. All the other reviews are right. Quiet. Fast (for a USB 2). Easy as a Plug-and-play with Windows 7 (probably other Window versions, too).
PLEASE note that the unit needs the AC Adaptor to provide power to run this unit. Unlike most of my other USB External Drives (250 GB or smaller), this unit does not run on the USB power provided by the PC. That point was in the small print and not specifically mentioned in the technical details (Only in the "Kit includes.... AC Adaptor..."), which is why I gave it a rating of 4 Stars instead of 5.
Minor inconvenience for a very good 1,000,000,000,000 byte external hard drive.

 | | Great Value External Hard Drive | September - 06 - 2010 |

I bought the 1 terabyte version of this hard drive back in early July 2010. So far, I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
When purchasing this from the box, you'll get the hard drive itself, the AC cord, the USB cord, and a guide/booklet thing that comes with most new purchases of many items.
This is a very simple hard drive, having only the AC port, the USB port, and a small, white LED that isn't bright or overwhelming like some LEDs on other external hard drives.
The casing on this drive is made out of a type of durable plastic. It looks sleek and shiny, and doesn't feel cheap or weak. The drive is also pretty lightweight.
Transfer rates with this drive are pretty good, considering the USB 2.0 connection. Anywhere from 20 to 50 megabits per second have been the transfer rates I've gotten. I haven't had the drive get very hot either. It's gotten only slightly warm. There is no ventilation in it though. I only use it for backups, so it's not turned on too much. If you're the type of person that wants to have a drive turned on all the time, it could get hotter.
I haven't had any crashes or losses of data so far. It hasn't worked in any bad way at all so far.
Now, I come to the one and only problem I have with the drive. An on/off switch. This drive does not have one. If you want to turn it off, you have to unplug it. No simple switch to press. I new this drive didn't include one when I bought it, but the other reviews I've read seemed to say the drive was amazing. So I hoped that they were right, and that the other qualities of the drive would out-shine the lack of an on/off switch.
Luckily, the reviews were right.
This drive is amazing. I highly recommend it.

 | | First ext b/u purchased | September - 05 - 2010 |

I had never purchased a back up before and relied on previous reviews to help me make the purchase. I read several positives about the WD ELements 1TB and the price was good. It was very easy to hook up and I have to assume it's doing it's job as the light comes on and blinks! So far so good. Am happy with the decision.
