Customer Reviews
 | | Reasonably satisfied | June - 18 - 2010 | | | by Thomas C. Hamilton from Sacramento, CA United States
Fair bit of upside that is offset by way too much crapware/bloatware. Would have been better with Win7 Pro and less junk SW. Unable to run Visual Studio 2008, mysterious crash every time I go into form design, no problems with VS2010 or any other SW. Could use better access to upgrades (memory and battery). Overall I am somewhat disappointed and was hoping for more/better

I am completely happy with my new Lenovo Y550P, ideapad. I have recommended it to everyone that asks. It is a bit too heavy to lug around, but at 6 lbs I knew that going in. The purchase, shipping and arrival were effortless and fast, it actually arrived the next day. One secret....do your research, know what you want and need and then get it from Amazon.
| | | | | | Excellent Build Quality, Bang for the Buck, insanely fast!! | May - 15 - 2010 | | | by Kranti Konganti Ok, I will try to be write this review in more detail as I can.
I had a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop which is 4 years old, It was working fine until I my room mate spilled water on it.
So there, I began my quest again for a laptop that is powerful yet affordable and makes my everyday life easier at work and for pleasure.
First of I will start off with my research towards different laptops and why I picked this laptop.
Since Computer industry is fast evolving all the time, any technology introduced would become obsolete in about a year (sry, rough guess). So I decided to have a laptop with the latest technology to keep up with future implications of various kinds of applications, softwares I will install in its lifetime that will consume more memory and have thirst for processor power.
I own a iPhone 3GS, and yes u guessed it wright, my first option was to buy a new Macbook Pro, but hell, did you see the price tag on it, ~1700$ for new i5, i7 processors, so right off, it was off my books. Considering myself an average knowledgeable person about who can futz with settings on a computer I can trade off ease of use (MacOSX) for other OS's with affordable price.
I never even bothered to look around any more Dells and HPs considering the hardware failure problems I had and many Hardware warranty replacements with my old Dell Laptop
Then it came down to 2
Toshiba Satellite A505-S6033 and main performance related specs were:
Intel Core i7-720QM Processorr
4GB DDR3 Ram with 6MB cache
500GB hard drive and
512MB GDDR3 discrete memory + up to 1755MB shared memory with NVIDIATurboCache technology
HD TruBrite LCD Display 16'' widescreen
which was around 900$
and the
Lenovo Ideapad y550p 324156U
with Intel Core i7-720QM Processor
4GB DDR3 Ram with 6MB cache
500 GB hard drive with 5400rpm
and NVIDIA GeForce GT 240M with 1 GB graphics memory
15.6 in WXGA VibrantView LED backlit (1366 x 768)
I was more impressed at the dedicated graphics card and the backlit LED which consumes less power than traditional LCD
and i was able to get it at discount for 800$ at microsoft store with a discount coupon.
Sweet deal!, I thought when I was happy i could save 150$, but getting same configuration, even better graphics card when compared to Toshiba
So there you go, I waited all excited until the puppy arrived.
Build Quality:
---------------
I opened it and first look was impressive with neat hexagonal gradient lcd cover in dark brown.
I like the orange stripe around the LCD screen.
Ideapad logo gives is good eye-candy.
Keyboard is comfortable for my big fingers.
Track pad was little discomfort, for its odd out of the center placement. In fact I was so frustrated with its behavior
But i guess that was because, I used my dell laptop for 4 years, and my fingers were meddling around the track pad with older track pad(dell) behavior. But then I got used to it and am happy with it. My brain knows now where it is located.
Performance
------------
Ok, I read all about the bloatware that comes with pre installed windows 7 64 bit os, so right away I booted the laptop with ubuntu 64 bit os,
and boy am I happy with it.
I never had such a awesome experience with such cool features from ubuntu 10.04 lts taking advantage of all the power it can use.
All the day-to-day applications (Firefox, open office, Rhythmbox (music player), and ofcourse VLC Media player) run hand-in-hand without any problem
I bet you can probably open more applications and this one would not deny you at any moment (;) don't overload it by opening gazillions of em').
Ubuntu recognizes the nVidia graphics card on the second reboot and will install the drivers for you, and from there on it is one smooth ride.
Complains/Suggestions/Things to look for
----------------------------------------
It generates a lot of heat (considering 8 cpu's running, and a constantly running fan to cool it). I installed xsensors and it shows an avg 77 degree celcius at normal operation. So I don't know if the temp falls down. But thats the thing you need to look for if you buy a powerful laptop.
the dolby subwoofer it has is not recognized by ubuntu and so cannot tell you about the sound quality as a ubuntu user.
Other than that, I am really really happy with my purchase and exceeds my expectation in every corner in terms of speed and performance.
I would strongly recommend anyone looking for a laptop who wants to be with current technology that will perform well in future with many software installations.
The only thing I miss with Ubuntu is iTunes (wait then there is Sun Virtualbox ,have not tried yet, but sure it will work)
Hope this review helped you in clarifying your doubts
